Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her background – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had come out of the experience, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The group of women also comprised experts in multiple disciplines.
The venture behind the mission is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
