Can You Solve This? The Overlooked Netherlands Creation That Forged the Contemporary World

One can find numerous candidates to claim the designation as “world’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The printing press. The combustion motor.

According to a recent publication, however, that honor belongs to the automated timber mill conceived by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.

“Before automated sawing, constructing a simple trading ship necessitated approximately 10 sawyers laboring over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered sawmills, an identical amount of cut lumber could be produced within a week.”

Owing to their rapid automated cutter, which converted timber into boards using almost no human effort, Dutch builders could construct ships more quickly compared to anyone else, an advantage that unleashed a century of Dutch maritime, financial as well as cultural dominance in Europe and the globe.

The First True Industrial Device

The inventor's sawmill, contends Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial true industrial machine.” A wind turbine rotated a wheel. A single part transformed the rotary movement to up-and-down motion for the saw. Another component transformed that same rotary movement into a lateral movement advancing the log to the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the log ahead one precise increment per cycle.

“Every component was simple by itself. Corneliszoon’s genius lay in how to integrate these parts so they operated in a perfectly controlled sequence, sawing with each descending motion while moving with each return stroke. This constituted a remarkably intelligent use of basic components.”

Which leads us up to today’s puzzle. I’d like you to reimagine a key the fundamental ideas behind this historic invention.

Circular to Vertical

Construct a machine which converts circular motion to up-and-down motion. You have these items only: A spinning wheel. Two pins. Two rods. A “guide”, which is a tube or sleeve through which a single the rods will fit perfectly. (Consider that you can put things on a stand, so the components do not collapse.)

The solution returns at 5pm UK time featuring the solution.

Meanwhile, NO SPOILERS. Instead, please suggest (less celebrated) contenders as the world’s most impactful creation.
