Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
