Her Royal Highness's Traditional Yuletide Musical Celebration Pays Tribute to Charity Helpers
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her annual Yuletide celebration at the iconic London venue, with attendees featuring royals, celebrities and local heroes who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.
The large audience will enjoy a mix of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including award-winning actors.
A Theme of Compassion and Love
The theme of the service, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on Friday, is kindness and showing love to others.
Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose daughter died of a tumour, and who established a foundation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a child with a terminal illness.
"The time, care and compassion you give, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the well-being of people," the Princess expressed in a letter ahead of the carol service.
A Gradual Return
The Princess of Wales is continuing her own steady comeback to the public eye following her health challenges and treatment, last month delivering her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".
Performance and Potential
Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from budding artists supported by the Future Talent charity, set up with the help of the former royal to increase availability of music lessons.
An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who plays the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been supported by the trust, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in tonight's service.
"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now a student at the renowned conservatoire, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to hone their artistic talents.
A Family Affair
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will also be at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many notable figures," she said.
Attending the service will be individuals spanning multiple eras.
That will include young Saphia Turner, nine, honouree of a prize for youthful altruism, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to collect donations for local food charities.
Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment
The Abbey has been adorned with specially made wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.
The musical lineup includes recording artist Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a Cornish sea shanty group, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "the icing on the cake for us."
This annual carol service will be aired by ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
