Tuesday brought citizens of the world's most polluted city encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "severe" level.

Alarming Air Quality Readings

Several parts of the capital registered an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the healthy threshold set by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1800, representing 15 to 20 times exceeding acceptable limits.

Firecracker Ban and Current Changes

Beginning in 2020, officials had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their major role to the hazardous smog that covers the metropolis as the cold season sets in.

However earlier this year, the newly elected local leadership approached the highest court to request a relaxation of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically questioned by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Judicial Verdict and Reality

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental activists, judges approved the proposal, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited time windows throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was widespread disregard of the time restrictions across the city, with little regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly version.

Several recording stations throughout the capital registered pollution peaking around the night hours to extremely hazardous levels recorded during celebrations in at least recent memory.

Regional Consequences

The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the festival also triggered a blame game with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region pointing to declining pollution levels in the city of Lahore on pollutants originating in India following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Pollution Crisis

Alarmingly severe readings of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have continued as a significant issue for fifteen-plus years, with the problem continuing to worsen.

Near the festival period, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to significantly exceeding the most severe readings ever documented in the Chinese city, which was previously regarded as the globally most contaminated city.

Diverse Contamination Factors

The situation in the capital is attributed to a mix of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, development work, garbage fires and haze from farm burning in adjacent regions of Punjab and Haryana.

In these regions, agricultural workers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, generating dangerous haze that then gets trapped over the capital as winter air descends.

Public Health and Financial Impact

Public health and economic impact on the nearly 33 million people living in the capital region is substantial, according to numerous research.

The contaminated air leads to increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can result in malignancies.

The pollution is projected to be responsible for approximately 10k untimely mortalities per year in the city.
